Biography: Annan was a Scottish portrait
photographer, working from 1857. He
used a
hansom cab as a portable darkroom to
enable location photography.

He is remembered for his photographs of
the explorer Livingstone and his
contemporaries, notable for the absence
absence of "props" and poses.

Annan also took pictures of the
Glasgow slums for the Glasgow
Improvement Trust; they portray vividly
the people and life in those areas.
