Selectors' Comments:
I think this is about expression – both the futility of it and a basic belief in it. The work is exhaustive, like a visual tantrum, but what comes around is an odd kind of vulnerability, as though the works want to make friends with the audience they have just assaulted. There's a few works in this show that take the piss out of the old boys of art history, and Ian's behemoth of a painting is one of them.
