‘“The Story of the Beard” is the story of an object, stolen from its safe place in social history and contemporary fashion, and given a new context in the narrative of this research. To disembody a beard from its owner was not my idea; I have seen caskets in museums containing the holy beards of dead emperors. Remove it from its context and it becomes ridiculous, whereas before it became the embodiment of power and mastery, mysticism and lust. Put it on a woman and the effect is curious. Despite herself, she will assume the mannerisms that are a result of her beard, and so affect the perfect disguise.’
